"Brett Myers can picture himself in an Astros uniform for years to come, and the team is doing its best to make sure it becomes a reality.
With longtime ace Roy Oswalt traded to Philadelphia, the Astros view Myers as the new anchor in their pitching rotation.
To that end, they look to sign Myers to a multiyear extension before the weekend is over, Astros general manager Ed Wade said Saturday.
"I can't commit to it, but (a deal) is real close" to being completed," Wade said. "It's a little bit beyond dotting the I's and crossing the T's, but not far beyond that."
Terms of the agreement were not available, but it likely will be a two-year deal with an option for a third.
A free agent signed to a one-year deal in January, Myers, 29, has proven to be the best addition the Astros made in the offseason, going 8-6 with a 3.10 ERA. He has lived up to his reputation as a workhorse, pitching two complete games and going at least six innings in all 21 starts this season.
"It's definitely an honor for me for them to ask me if I wanted to stay," Myers said. "I definitely do. We're in the process of working it out, so hopefully it works out well for both of us."
In the Astros' eyes, Myers has shown he can help the club move forward.
"This guy is a warrior; I don't know if there is another word for the way he approaches the game," Wade said. "If (manager Brad Mills) is going to come get the ball, he wants (him) to claw it from his dead hand."
Myers was signed to a $3.1 million contract during the offseason. He has an $8 million mutual option for 2011 with a $2 million buyout. "
