Ashley Cole has told Chelsea that he wants to sign a new contract and extend his career at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old England international has won eight major honours since joining from rivals Arsenal in 2006 for £5million, plus William Gallas going in the opposite direction.

Chelsea recently introduced a new policy to hand only one-year deals to players over 30 and Cole agreed such an extension in January, which ensured he could stay until next summer.

But the left-back, who has been able to maintain a high level of performances despite having to cope with a chronic ankle problem that dates back to 2010, is already wanting to commit to another 12 months at the club.

He said: “I signed an extension at the start of the year and so have this year left and it will be up at the end of the season. I hope to stay for longer. I have had a great time here, a great career here and, of course, I’d love to stay if they still want me.

“There is going to be a time when they will have to replace me. I have Ryan [Bertrand] in my place and one day I’m going to want to watch him play, so the time will come when I do finish my career.”

The return of Jose Mourinho as manager has also played a part in making Cole, who will not be selected to face former club Arsenal in the Capital One Cup tonight, want to prolong his career at Chelsea.

Mourinho was the coach who convinced him to leave Arsenal for Chelsea seven years ago and Cole added: “From the day he came, he said he’s not come here to make friends, he’s come here to win and that’s what players want to hear.

“We always want to win things, to be successful as a team and, hopefully, we can do that under Jose.

“I don’t think he’s different [to how he was before]. He’s always been the same. He’s come back to the club where he did a fantastic job winning two titles.

“He always demands 100 per cent whether it’s in a game or in training. He always wants the best, he always wants your best. He’s a fighter and a winner and he wants to go into every game and win, just like us players.”
