Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole is reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool over a free transfer move to Anfield this summer.

The 33-year-old left-back is out of contract at the end of the season and thus able to speak to clubs now. Reports surrounding Liverpool’s interest began in December and surfaced again last week.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers knows Cole from his time at Chelsea as a coach and, according to reports, has shown interest in the out-of-favour former Arsenal player.

Left-back is clearly an area of need for Rodgers this summer, with Aly Cissokho unlikely to be signed on a permanent deal once his loan spell ends and first choice Jose Enrique having spent most of the season on the treatment table.

Even when fit, not many supporters are convinced by the Spaniard anyway. That’s meant Jon Flanagan has actually been Liverpool’s best left-back this season, despite being a right-back naturally.

Glen Johnson’s imminent return from injury will likely see Flanagan return to the left of Liverpool’s defence.

Flanagan though isn’t a long-term solution to the perennial problem area at Anfield despite his impressive displays this season. He could push to make the right-back spot his, or become an excellent squad player capable of covering on either side – especially should Liverpool qualify for the Champions League and thus Rodgers require a deeper squad.
