A’s top prospect Addison Russell played in an extended spring training game in Arizona on Wednesday, the shortstop’s heaviest activity since suffering a severe hamstring strain in April.

Russell played four innings at short and had two at-bats. He’ll stay in Arizona and continue rehabbing until he’s ready to rejoin one of the minor league clubs, assistant general manager David Forst relayed via e-mail. There’s no timetable for when that will be. But it’s a good sign that Russell finally is taking part in game activity.

He was rated the No. 3 overall prospect in the majors by ESPN before the season, and the A’s consider the 20-year-old on the fast track to the majors –- when healthy.
