Arsenal have been warded off attempting to sign Dundee United sensation Ryan Gauld, dubbed the 'new Lionel Messi'.

The youngster has been on the radar at the Emirates for a number of weeks now, following his meteoric rise to stardom within the Dundee first-team.

At only 17-years-of-age Gauld has already earned himself visits from scouts of Manchester United, Real Madrid and Arsenal- but it's the latter of those three teams who are said to be paying him the most interest.

However regardless of Arsene Wenger's future plans for the Scottish starlet, the performance director for the Scottish FA, Mark Wotte, has branded any move to a big English club as ridiculous, according to the Metro.

"I would prefer him to stay in Scotland, play his games here, before getting a recognised move to an English club," said Wotte.
