According to the newspaper, citing multiple sources, the Yankees third baseman followed a recommendation from Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and pursued an innovative procedure called Orthokine.

The Yankees approved the treatment, which was performed within the last month, and cleared Rodriguez's procedure with the Commissioner's Office to avoid the appearance that Rodriguez might be receiving impermissible treatment."
