The Cardinals announced Thursday they have signed third-round draft pick Tyrann Mathieu, a safety from LSU, to a four-year contract.

Mathieu was the 69th overall pick in the NFL draft. Contract terms were not disclosed by the Cardinals.

Agent Patrick Lawlor told USA Today Sports’ Mike Garafolo that Mathieu had signed a deal worth over $3 million, which is more than $100,000 higher than last year’s No. 69 pick (Buffalo Bills wide receiver T.J. Graham) received.

Lawlor said there’s no additional language in the contract about money forfeiture due to a positive drug test. Mathieu will be subject to the same contract rules as “anybody else in the league” as determined by the collective-bargaining agreement, though Lawlor has said Mathieu had verbally agreed to regular drug tests.

USA Today Sports also reported that the Cardinals split up the $662,500 guaranteed bonus Mathieu was slated to receive into a $265,000 signing bonus up front and roster bonuses totaling $397,500 throughout the final three years of the contract.

That structure, as opposed to the full signing bonus most draft picks receive, allows the Cardinals to save some money if Mathieu has any personal or drug-related issues throughout the course of the deal.

He was suspended and ultimately removed from the LSU program for repeated marijuana use and failed drug tests at the school.

The Cardinals, however, were convinced Mathieu has been rehabilitating himself and will get the necessary help moving forward.

“There’s always an element of risk,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said on the day Mathieu was drafted. “But with the structure we have in place and the agreement we have with Tyrann and his representative, we’re going to take the necessary measures to make sure he walks the straight and narrow.

“We felt comfortable with the risk that was involved.”

In two seasons at LSU, Mathieu had eight fumble recoveries (two of which were returned for touchdowns), a school-record 11 forced fumbles, four interceptions, 136 tackles and 16 passes defensed. He also returned 27 punts for 421 yards and two touchdowns.
