"Receiver Larry Fitzgerald is about to sign his third huge contract with the Cardinals, so he could have afforded to put diamonds in the soles of the cleats he brought to a news conference Saturday.
Instead, he joked that he was ready to put those cleats to use on a day off, given that he had agreed to terms on an eight-year contract that could be worth $120 million.
"When you sign an eight-year deal and you come to the boss' office, I had to feel like I was doing something," Fitzgerald said with a trademark smile. "Maybe he wanted me to go out there and run routes today, and I brought them just in case."
Fitzgerald was accompanied to the news conference by his brother, Marcus, family friend Jordin Sparks and, of course, the cleats, which have diamond-shaped holes cut in the top. (Even the richest athletes can't always find cleats that allow enough space for their toes. Fitzgerald has said he usually loses his toenails a couple of months into every season.)
Financial terms were not released, but a source said the first five years of the deal will make Fitzgerald the NFL's highest-paid non-quarterback. He will be under contract through the 2018 season.
"Larry Fitzgerald's been one of the most dynamic, if not the most dynamic, football player in Cardinals history," team President Michael Bidwill said. "We're excited about what the future holds, not only for Larry and the Cardinals, but to see him retire as a Cardinal some day. Hopefully, not any time soon."
Saturday's news conference was called after ESPN reported that Fitzgerald had agreed to terms on a contract worth $120 million, including $50 million guaranteed. The deal has not been signed.
Fitzgerald, who turns 28 on Aug. 31, would collect all $120 million only if he continues to produce at his current rate. The $50 million figure could not be confirmed, and such numbers usually are tilted in the player's favor because they come from the agent."
