The NFL implemented a new rule for the 2016 season, mandating a coin must rotate in the air during the pregame toss.

This rule also applies to the ceremony before overtime. If the coin doesn't flip in the air, the referee is instructed to toss it again.

The NFL drew scrutiny during the playoffs, when Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers complained that the coin wasn't flipped properly in overtime, during their divisional-round game against the Arizona Cardinals.
