Angels starter Kazmir meets with Scioscia

"Struggling left-hander Scott Kazmir had a long closed-door meeting with manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Mike Butcher on Wednesday.

Kazmir, who has a 6.82 ERA in six starts and has pitched six innings just once, had another shaky outing Tuesday against his former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. He needed 108 pitches to finish five innings and gave up seven hits with three walks. That he only gave up three runs was a positive.

"We just wanted to get an understanding of where he felt he was, some adjustments that needed to be made and considered if he needed a little time to make those adjustments," Scioscia said. "He doesn't think so. Mike Butcher doesn't think so.

"He's going to start Monday in Texas and have a good bullpen session in the interim."

Scioscia said after Tuesday's game he would consider having Kazmir miss a start if a well-timed off day could offer the opportunity to tweak the rotation. The Angels are off today, but Kazmir will start on an extra day of rest.

Kazmir has struggled with his slider and lacked fastball command Tuesday, but doesn't think he is all that far off from finding some answers.

"It's tough trying to find a good rhythm or tempo but it feels like it's there," Kazmir said. "It's just a matter of me putting it all together."

Finding the right arm slot seems to be Kazmir's biggest objective. He has 16 walks combined over his past four starts.

"That's something he's trying to get back to that's gotten away from him a little bit over the last couple of years," Scioscia said. "I think it's definitely affecting some of the things he needs to do on the mound. It sounds like an easy fix. He's making strides towards it, but it's not where he needs to be.""
