"Dan Haren didn't figure to get a whole lot of offensive support from his Angels teammates Tuesday night, not with Justin Verlander starting for the Detroit Tigers.
What Haren did get from his teammates, however, was the type of defense that can make a pitcher forget about any lack of run support.
The Angels made several superb plays in the field, a couple bordering on the spectacular, and Haren made Erick Aybar's RBI double in the second inning stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Tigers in front of 39,006 at Angel Stadium.
Haren made 122 pitches while throwing his second shutout of the season, striking out seven and earning his 100 th career victory.
He allowed only two hits - a third inning triple by Austin Jackson that center fielder Peter Bourjos nearly caught, and a fifth-inning single by Jhonny Peralta.
Haren did not walk a batter, and the only other Tigers hitter to reach base was Brennan Boesch (Harvard-Westlake), who struck out in the first inning and reached on a wild pitch.
"Dan should frame that one," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Incredible.
"That's a tough lineup with power all the way through it, and especially (impressive) facing a guy like Verlander."
Verlander is an All-Star, but he isn't expected to pitch in the All-Star Game because he is scheduled to pitch Sunday, and Major League Baseball rules prohibit a pitcher who starts the Sunday before the game from pitching in the Midsummer Classic.
Verlander was gone after a two-out walk to Russell Branyan in the eighth inning, going 73 innings, allowing just the one run and seven hits."
