Angels reward Haren for effort with victory over Seattle

"It seems as if Dan Haren is no longer waiting for run support from the Angels' offense.

The veteran pitcher and former Pepperdine star took matters into his own hands and shut out the Seattle Mariners through seven innings on Sunday, guiding the Angels to a 3-0 victory and weekend sweep at Angel Stadium.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Angels, their longest winning streak since the first week of June. They won five consecutive games during that stretch, including a three-game sweep of the Mariners.

Haren improved to 3-4 since coming to the Angels in a July 25 trade with Arizona but his record could be a lot better with some offensive help.

The Angels averaged six runs in Haren's three post-trade victories, but have scored just 2.1 runs in his seven other starts (four losses and three no-decisions).

Haren lowered his ERA as an Angel to 3.04.

"I'm happy we finally won a game that I pitched," Haren said. "I'm definitely happy with the way I've been throwing the ball overall the last few weeks."

The Angels aren't complaining.

Haren allowed two runs in seven innings to the Cleveland Indians earlier in the week and escaped with a no-decision in a game the Angels lost.

He pitched seven shutout innings in the start prior to that, against Seattle, and failed to get a decision.

"Danny's been pitching well for us," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.

"Danny's been, ever since he's come over here, giving us a chance to win every time he goes out there."

The only thing that was different about Sunday's start was that the Angels' offense was able to back him up.

They took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Hideki Matsui hit a foul ball down the third-base line with the bases loaded. Matsui not only hit the ball but he also knocked the mitt off of the hand of Mariners catcher Josh Bard.

Matsui was awarded first base on catcher's interference, forcing Erick Aybar to score from third.

The Angels doubled their lead in the sixth inning when Juan Rivera scored Mike Napoli with a two-out single. Napoli closed out the scoring with a home run in the eighth inning. "
