Angels left-hander Kazmir lands on DL with fatigued left shoulder

"The Angels find themselves needing a starting pitcher for Tuesday's series opener against the New York Yankees after placing left-hander Scott Kazmir on the 15-day disabled list Sunday due to left shoulder fatigue.

Kazmir, who has struggled mightily in posting a 7-9 record with a 6.92 ERA in 17 starts, felt some stiffness in recent throwing sessions, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. Because he hasn't pitched since July 10, Kazmir can come off the disabled list as early as next Monday.

"Some stiffness has come up recently and we decided that we could skip his next start and give him some time to rest up a bit," Scioscia said. "With the All-Star break and the way the schedule works out, we can push him back a start and go from there."

Scioscia indicated Tuesday's starting pitcher will be called up from the minor leagues and announced by the team today.

The Angels also announced that shortstop Maicer Izturis will be activated from the disabled list, where he's been since June 17 with an injured forearm.

They made room for Izturis by reassigning first baseman Paul McAnulty to Triple-A Salt Lake.

When asked why McAnulty - who batted .136 with a home run and two RBIs with only three hits in 22 at-bats with the Angels - was sent down instead of little-used outfielder Cory Aldridge, Scioscia expressed a desire to get McAnulty a little more work.

"We are going to let the dust settle a bit before doing anything else, but Paul needs to go down, swing the bat and play every day," Scioscia said. "He needs to get more work than he is getting up here."

Izturis' return to the lineup came after a 1-for-3 night with Salt Lake on Saturday that saw him play seven innings in the field."
