Chelsea’s manager-in-waiting Antonio Conte would like Juventus centre-half Leonardo Bonucci as a long-term replacement for John Terry in central defence, when the time comes for the club’s captain of the last 12 years to bid farewell.

No final decision has yet been made on Terry’s future which will be Conte’s call when he takes up his place after the European championships as Roman Abramovich’s 11th managerial appointment. Bonucci, 28, would not be a simple deal for Chelsea to pull off with the player having signed a new five-year deal at Juventus last summer but, as with all their managers, Chelsea want to back their man in the transfer market.
