"Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja is heading to training camp on a tryout with the San Jose Sharks.
Lilja, who turned down a one-year, $1-million offer from the Wings this summer, had been skating with his former teammates in Detroit while waiting to get an offer from an NHL club. He told reporters after Wednesday's skate at Joe Louis Arena he wasn't sure where he would end up. He had been mulling offers from Russia's Kontinental Hockey League but was hoping to get invited to a training camp with an NHL club. The Wings invited him to join their training camp on a tryout, but he would have had little chance to earn a contract.
Lilja, 35, will be reunited with Sharks coach Todd McLellan, who was an assistant with the Red Wings when they won the Cup in 2008."
