"Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr., hasn't been working the phones looking for a trade partner.
As consistently unproductive as the Phillies offense has been so far, it's looking like it'll get a jolt when Chase Utley returns, not with Amaro dealing one of his spare starting pitchers for a bat.
"I think it's too soon for that," Amaro said before offensive woes continued Wednesday in a 2-1 Phillies win over Colorado.
Amaro prefers keeping starter-turned-middle-reliever Kyle Kendrick and Triple-A righty Vance Worley in the organization at least for the time being because they were pressed into starts this month while Joe Blanton and Roy Oswalt were on the disabled list.
"I really don't see us having excess starting pitching," Amaro said. "I wish I did. We have to be careful about what we think is depth for us. Right now, I think we've gotta kind of ride out the storm a little bit and get guys healthy and hope guys start performing a little better."
The Phillies snapped their four-game losing streak with Wednesday's win, but still have scored just nine runs in their last five games. For the season, they've been held to three-or-fewer runs 22 times in 42 games.
Amaro's hope is things change dramatically soon with Utley appearing to be in the final stages of rehabbing his way back from a spring knee injury. The five-time All-Star second baseman was scheduled to take another big step by playing nine innings Wednesday and today for Class A Clearwater."
