UCLA coach Steve Alford did not rule out the possibility of becoming the new head basketball coach at Indiana, where he helped lead the Hoosiers to a national title in 1987.

Indiana on Thursday fired Tom Crean, prompting speculation that Indiana will pursue Alford, in his fourth season as UCLA’s coach and preparing his third-seeded Bruins to play 14th-seeded Kent State Friday at Golden 1 Center.

Referencing the ’87 national title, Alford said, “I was part of that. I stood on stage with a great group of guys and won a national championship. It’s my home state. I played there. So obviously all that comes up, but I love UCLA.’’

Alford suggested career moves are a matter of faith for him.
