A.J. Burnett hopes new pitching motion will yield more success

"Before his previous start, A.J. Burnett scrambled to undo 13 years' worth of muscle memory. At the behest of pitching coach Larry Rothschild, the Yankees right-hander changed a major part of his pitching motion, one he has grooved since his earliest days as a pro.

The radical moves led to clear signs of progress for Burnett, whose performance against the Boston Red Sox last Thursday was enough to sway the Yankees, who now want to see what he can do with more time on his new mechanics.

Burnett, who allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings last week, is anxious to find out himself. He is scheduled to start Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles.

"There's no more fixing, no more changing," said Burnett, who is 9-11 with a 5.25 ERA. "It's just going with what I've been working on.""
