After Game 7 loss, focus on Grizzlies shifts to free agents Gasol, Battier

"From the money man in Chicago to the people who made the Grizzlies' magical playoff run happen on the court, they were all in agreement on how to keep the good times rolling.

Re-sign 7-foot center Marc Gasol and find a deft 3-pointer shooter or two. That, and welcome back injured forward Rudy Gay with his good arm reloaded.

Griz owner Michael Heisley normally has his calendar cleared for a date with the NBA draft lottery, which unfolds tonight in Secaucus, N.J. But Heisley spent Monday basking in the reality that his Griz only need a minor tweak -- not a roster overhaul or lottery luck -- to improve on their historic season.

The Griz, who won their first playoff games and series, became the first eighth seed to force a Game 7 before losing to Oklahoma City in the Western Conference semifinals.

If the Griz weren't the league's fourth-worst 3-point shooting team and had Gay then "it would have turned out differently," insisted Heisley.

His sentiment was backed up in FedExForum on Monday before the Griz packed their belongings and departed for well-deserved vacations. Players and coaches believe their playoff run forever changed the team's perception.

"I don't think there will be any Laker jerseys or Heat jerseys or Celtic jerseys when those teams come to town," Griz coach Lionel Hollins said. "It will be everybody rooting for the Memphis Grizzlies."

The same group that won 46 regular-season games and then tacked on seven postseason victories will return largely intact. But Gasol's future will be a major issue this summer.

Other personnel matters involving Shane Battier, Sam Young and Hamed Haddadi must also be addressed.

Hollins labeled Gasol as "important to who we are" while Griz general manger Chris Wallace called Gasol the team's No. 1 priority this offseason. The Griz can't negotiate with Gasol -- a restricted free agent -- until July 1 and have the right to match any offers he receives.

Heisley has said Gasol will decide if he wants to stay in Memphis. Gasol was noncommittal while also downplaying any notion he wants to join his older brother, Pau, in Los Angeles."
