"Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy doesn't expect running back Joseph Addai to play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers because of the hamstring injury he suffered last week against Baltimore.
"Dominic (Rhodes) will start and we've got Chad Simpson and Cliff Dawson," Dungy said Wednesday. "I think that's going to be our three backs this week, and those guys will do well."
The Colts' depth chart at running back was transformed when Addai went out during the first quarter against the Ravens and Mike Hart suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury to his right knee early in the second quarter.
NFL.com reported Wednesday that Addai has a slightly torn hamstring and is expected to miss two to four weeks. That prognosis didn't square with Dungy's observation.
"When we get to the end of the week, there might even be some thoughts to play him (Sunday), but we've got a lot of time left in this season," Dungy said. "Rather than rush him back too quick, my sense is we'll go with these three guys."
Rhodes came in for Addai and rushed 25 times for 78 yards and a touchdown against Baltimore. The Colts will back him up with Simpson, signed off their practice squad, and Dawson, a free agent who was watching the game in his Denver home.
"I'll be ready," Simpson vowed. "I knew it was always a possibility. You don't wish guys getting hurt, anything like that, but if they put it on me, I'll be ready."
Dungy said he didn't know whether Hart will require surgery, but Hart has been placed on injured reserve.
Dawson can be expected to at least help in Hart's role in the kicking game. Dawson was a special teams regular for the Colts as a rookie last season but was waived the final week of this preseason."
