Along with death and taxes, there is this certainty: Rehabbing professional athletes will always maintain they are recovering ahead of schedule.

That said, it’s not surprising that 49ers wide receiver Kyle Williams offered a positive update, via Twitter, on Tuesday, four months and one day after he sustained a torn ACL against the Saints: “Ran today first time since surgery and felt great #speed,” he wrote.

The 49ers, of course, hope Williams is, indeed, making significant strides in his recovery. He is perhaps the leading candidate to assume Ted Ginn’s punt-return duties and he offers quickness and speed, qualities in short supply among the current corps of wide receivers. Williams’ 57-yard reception against the Bears last year was the 49ers’ longest pass play of the season.
