"As Harris Barton's opening drive hooked low and left of the fairway – the third straight unimpressive tee shot by the 49ers – head coach Jim Harbaugh turned to his teammates and said, "The Giants are feeling awfully good about themselves right now."
Not to worry. The 49ers came back to acquit themselves well in Tuesday's charity shootout at Pebble Beach. Barton and Dwight Clark teamed to win two holes in the alternate-shot format, as did Will Clark and Matt Cain of the Giants. One hole was halved.
As was the case last year, a sizable gallery followed the football/baseball players-turned-golfers as they played Nos, 1, 2, 3, 17 and 18. Harbaugh and quarterback Alex Smith, neither of whom played in last year's inaugural edition, drew some of the biggest reactions from the crowd.
The event raised $100,000 for charity. "
