The NFL announced on Wednesday that 49ers defensive end Demarcus Dobbs will be suspended one game for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Dobbs was arrested for marijuana possession and DUI on Nov. 30 2012 after crashing his car in Santa Clara at 4 a.m. No one else was involved in the single-car accident.

Per the league suspension Dobbs will miss the 49ers’ regular season opener on Sept. 8 against the Green Bay Packers. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Sept. 9. Dobbs does not have to miss any preseason practices or games.

Dobbs has been temporarily filling the first-team spot left vacant by Justin Smith who is recovering from a minor finger injury. When Dobbs addressed his arrest in an interview earlier this month he called it a “learning experience.”
