If things go well...
Carmelo Anthony will continue to be one of the top scorers in the league and bring this team back to the playoffs. While they may not win their division with the new look Brooklyn Nets the favorite, they are still a top team in the weaker Eastern conference. J.R. Smith, Tyson Chandler and even Andrea Bargnani will be the key to the Knicks making it to the Conference finals, but defensively, there are too many liabilities to make it to the finals. If Imam Shumpert steps up, this team could make a serious run, but it doesn’t look like it will happen in this season.
If things go poorly...
If either Melo or J.R. Smith struggle, this team will collapse and fold, getting knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. Bargnani will not perform any better than he did in Toronto, proving that no one really gained anything from the trade. While the Knicks are a talented young team, there are a lot of team issues that can interfere with their on court success, specifically Smith. Woodson has not had the most control over his players and if it weren’t for the Eastern Conference having so many weak teams, the Knicks would have a much harder time reaching the playoffs. There is also the free agent questions surrounding Carmelo and failure to go deep in the playoffs could mark the end of his time in New York.
