If things go well...
They will win more than 45 games and find themselves in contention in the Western Conference finals. There are a lot of new pieces, specifically the big D12, so the key to success will come down to chemistry between Harden and Howard. If the preseason is any indication, there won’t be any issues as the two have picked apart opposing teams with ease. Harden will still be the go to guy in crunch time but he will rack up plenty of ally-oop assists to the big man. Chandler Parsons was also key to the success and will have more room to knock down shots from beyond the arc with Howard too much of a presence not to double down.
If things go poorly...
Howard is the key to this team’s success and its failure. He completely changes the way the Rockets will play, from a high tempo offense to a slower approach to allow the big man to bang down low. If this new style doesn’t work the way it did last season, than Howard will be at the center of the issues and could cause this team to self-destruct. While Howard and Harden will be the reason for the Rockets success, players like Lin and Parsons will be integral to a deep playoff run. Lin had a troubled season last year, so there are doubts surrounding him as the starting point guard going into the season. If he fails to turn things around, it will require Harden and Howard to pick up even more of the work.
