If things go well...
Winning the Championship in 2011 was the start of a decline for this team. Dirk is coming back healthy this season which is key to their success, no matter how old he is. While they lost a lot of players, they gained some much needed point guard help with Ellis and Calderon. Offensively, they are talented and should still compete in the West. A playoff spot is not out of the question and should be considered the goal for this team, but anything past that is definitely exceeding expectations.
If things go poorly...
While they have offensive talent, defensively they are very poor in a conference that is loaded with offensive weapons. With Dirk slowing down, this team will have a difficult time outscoring their opponents unless Ellis can become a consistent 20 point scorer. This team has a very good chance of missing the playoffs with the current roster and with Dirk in the final year of his contract, Mark Cuban has a lot of work to do in order to keep him. A big trade is always on the table for Cuban and could be the only thing to turn this season around and keep this franchise from a serious rebuilding phase.
