There are few programs in college basketball that have had more success in the speculative business of hiring head coaches than the Butler Bulldogs.

From Barry Collier, who built the program, Butler promoted assistants Thad Matta, Todd Lickliter, Brad Stevens, Brandon Miller and Chris Holtmann.

Only Miller was not a raging success, in part because of health reasons that led him to resign after slightly more than a year on the job. All of the others producing winning teams, reached the NCAA Tournament and advanced once there.

Now the athletic director, Collier could choose to follow this nearly flawless formula. However, Butler is a different program than when it made the majority of the other moves. As a member of the Big East, the competition is greater and the stakes are higher — and the rewards are richer, which may open a new vein of candidates for BU.
