Tuesday night is exactly why Major League Baseball had to implement coach's challenges for this season. The Pittsburgh Pirates got robbed of a win over the SF Giants by the umpire on the field...only to have that call overturned by the replay official.
For the first time in the long history of baseball, a game was decided by instant replay and the result was a walk-off coach's challenge.
In a very difficult National League Central division playoff race, this win/loss could be huge when looked back upon. The last think MLB wants is to see a team potentially miss the playoffs because of one single blown call in early May.
The Pirates, of course, have a bit of a history of blown calls at the end of ball games. Remember Jerry Meals?
A manager's challenge could have helped the Pirates on this infamous night in 2011.
