There are only four teams remaining in Euro 2016, Portugal and Wales do battle in one semifinal and Germany and France square off in the other. Regardless of what happens in the remaining matches of the competition the real MVP’s have been Iceland.
The tiny island nation provided one of the greatest upsets and were one of the great feel-good stories in a long ass time. Euro 2016 was the countries first appearance in a major football tournament. We’re talking about first goal, draw, win, knock out win and appearance in a quarterfinal. There were a lot of checks of the historical bucket list for Iceland over the last couple weeks.
The highlight being the shocking victory over England in the round of 16, that will be remembered by sports fans forever. Every fan that saw that match will remember that Iceland’s team and their vaunted Viking Clap. Here are a few examples of the Viking Clap, which very quickly has become one of the most popular chants in sports.
Here’s a clap after the last game in the group, a late victory over Austria.
The Viking clap (and adjoining howl), become a star following Iceland’s win over England and trumped Brexit jokes on social media.
Even in defeat the clap dominated a stadium.
The country of Iceland were welcomed home as champions and pretty much the whole country showed up to perform the ultimate viking clap.
